Hi guys, after a break of 12 years I now have time to get my old group together. Now im looking for email playes for them to interact with, you will be given full details regarding present and past history, and geographical location, you will play the part of an influential character. Such as for example a lord or general, a powerful mage perhaps. I have so many roles to fill both good and evil.

So if you have a little time to spare please respond telling me what kind of character you would like to play and preferred aligngment.

Thanks guys and I look forward to hearing from you.

Stephen,

I've always wanted to do this with my players - run a game and have a bunch of other people play the characters in the world.  I think I would like to play an evil noble.

Please don't worry e mail play is a lot more civilsed unless you come into contact with the several large groups which kicks off next weekend then things can happen at a very fast pace. All i need to know really is race preffered, alignment if possible and what kind of position you would like to play, any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

I could be a warmage, or a fighter with 1srt. college. But that kind of things came from the character geeration system. It's not a player's election. How it work?

OK, if I understand what has been said so far, I would like to play a Dwarf (big surprise!) merchant. I'm not sure on the alignment side, something along the lines of he has a code of ethics and will follow them but you may not agree with the rules he plays by. Sort of like the Principled alignment in Paladium.

Np, just let me know who i will be playing, if you have and elf shaper mage who is a bowyer or weapon-smith, in the past my playing has been adventure mages classes although any of the class can go out on adventures the shaper and rune mage need a fixed base more then say a fire mage is my normal class.

OK, if I understand what has been said so far, I would like to play a Dwarf (big surprise!) merchant. I'm not sure on the alignment side, something along the lines of he has a code of ethics and will follow them but you may not agree with the rules he plays by. Greetings all,
I check in on this discussion group every now and again, but I don't think I have ever contributed anything to the discussion. I have been playing Dragonquest on and off since 1981 since my early years in high school. My most consistent run was during high school & early college, then in grad school and then a variety of groups on and off since then. I went through an unfortunate episode in college that culminated in the departure of most of my gaming material. I was able to reassemble most of it in one form or another in the early 1990s, although I was a bit disappointed in TSR's 3rd Edition.
The game was shelved and I thought finished after ordination in 1993. (Yes, I am a priest.) A group a students that played Magic the Gathering was introduced to the game in 1996-97 and still plays to this day. We played for the better part of two years as time allowed with pastoral demands. About a year into my next assignment I introduced another group of players to Dragonquest, but they didn't take to it like the last group. They enjoyed it but no one wanted to learn to GM the game. After becoming a pastor I have played the game on & off a couple of times with nephews and other adults who had an interest in the hobby. My latest venture into the hobby is with a friend of mine who has two sons and the daughters of some other friends of mine. They are all in junior high or high school, so I wanted another interested adult, preferably a relative, having a dad present has been really good. My hope is to get a couple of young GMs out of this group. While I hope to play with this group on a consistent basis, my track record is not one of endurance. Time will tell.
Since the early days in the 1980s I have added material to the game. My major disappointment in the early days of playing was the lack of material to support Dragonquest. I got in the habit of taking material from D & D and Dragon Magazine and converting it for Dragonquest. I think the one of the first things I did was add Avians (Birdmen) and gnomes to the playable races in the game. Gradually other things got added, like 3 professions that were mutually exclusive skills and D & D 3.0 added an avalanche of material. Anyway, in 2000 I opened up Dragonquest Frontiers as a place to hold material on-line. Since then, more and more material has been added and I don't see any end in sight. I think the main thing I think about is enjoyment of the game and some semblance of game balance. While I think I have succeeded in the first, I am forever struggling to discern the latter. More on this later I am sure. Thanks for the community and diverse conversations here.

              Subject: New Edition of DQ
              Merry Christmas everyone!

Sometime back in 2003, Rodger Thorm approached me for a copy of my Word DQ rules, which were submitted to the files section of this list for all to use/abuse as they see fit.

At the time, I had just started my publishing company (RedBrick) and didn't have time to continue with edits/revisions to that set.

Well, 2011 is upon us. I have had some recent conversations with Eric Goldberg and indicated to him that I was keen to publish a "retro clone" (for want of a better term) of DQ, to get it back into print and available (and, more importantly, more openly supported). Eric doesn't hold any rights to DQ, but expressed an interest in how this might progress.

I am keen to assemble a Development Team in the New Year (we do all of our game development online) and was wondering who on this list would be interested?

Before you flood the list with cries of derision or acclaim, please be aware that we are looking for "serious" team members ONLY. Those who are prepared to give of their time in the name of getting DQ out into the market again. There won't be financial reward. There won't be groupies or vouchers for hot chocolate. Just hard (but fun!) work.

At RedBrick, we look for "team players" -- you need to be prepared to leave you ego at the door as sometimes decisions are made that you might not agree with to get products finished, but we do listen to and value all opinions. You need to fit into this mold.

If you are interested, here is the test: Please email me with a short write-up with your experience with DQ, your interest in this project (why and how much effort you think you can realistically commit), and what your expectations are. The cutoff date for expressions of interest is 8 Jan 2011, so get in quick! My email is (change the obvious bits): vestrivan at gmail dot com

I look forward to your responses (and some lively discussion on the list).

              Thanks for the link, Jason!

Seriously, if Silver Griffon Games want to take this on, I'm totally okay with that. Pointless for two companies to go head-to-head on this.

I might drop them a line and see what they want to do.

              Kind regards, James

Is there a way forward where you can openly and legally reprint the DQ rules and/or do a new version? Doesn't WotC still hold a trademark on DragonQuest? Obviously all the copyrights are still in force for the original publications.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see DQ come back to life. I'm just curious as to how it might be done.

While the copyright is still held by Hasbro/WOTC/Former TSR, the Trademark was in fact abandoned.

Trademark is a case of “use it or lose it”.  I believe that the publication of the Third Edition of Dragonquest and the module Shattered Statue in 1989 by TSR was only to show that they were still using the trademark come renewal time (every ten years) not a serious attempt to revive the game.  Here are the records from the USTPO:

Is there a way forward where you can openly and legally reprint the DQ rules and/or do a new version? Doesn't WotC still hold a trademark on DragonQuest? Obviously all the copyrights are still in force for the original publications.

My understanding with the retro-clone movement is that it's rather firmly based on the notion that a games rules cannot be guarded under IP law except by patent. Copyright can restrict the right to copy the presentation of the rule text and images; trademark can restrict the use of logos and trade-dress (like the names of games); patents can restrict the use of processes (but it's arguable whether they can cover an entire set of rules, and they're subject to restrictions around filing and granting).

Retro-clones seem to have been created assuming that you could use a new, different text to describe the rules of a game, and as long as you avoided using the trade-dress of the original, you'd be safe. Well: that said, you wouldn't be safe from /attempted/ prosecution but you might be safe from conviction.

That said, it would take a brave indie publisher to ignore a cease and desist letter from Hasbro, but their lawyers might figure that retro-clones of their long out of print games rather represent advertising and sustenance for their current game offerings by contributing to the overall health of the hobby.

Note -- I am not a lawyer; this is only my casually informed understanding of IP law and what the retro-clone publishers seem to be doing.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see DQ come back to life. I'm just curious as to how it might be done.

It should probably be noted that there are live trademarks for the name Dragon Quest, related to the Japanese video game of this name.

OK, when D&D went to 4th edition a lot of people, myself among them, hated it. Pathfinder has put out a rewrite of 3.5. I have a copy. It isn't called D&D but it is obviously the smae game. There are some improvements over 3.5, so call the Pathfinder edition 3.6 if you will. The point is DQ could be reprinted, if what Pathfinder has done is legal, but the rules woould have to be rewritten and the name would have to be different.

Pathfinder takes specific advantage of the OGL and also specifically avoids use of the D20 licensing agreement. Other games have also done this. However the OGL framework at root depends upon the publication of rules as "open content" founded upon an "SRD" or "system reference document". The IP owners of DragonQuest never released any of the games text as an SRD or under the provisions of an OGL license.

You can't just use the OGL to subvert the IP rights of any property you like, willy-nilly.

Retro-clones are rather firmly (or not so firmly, depending on your point of view) based on the notion that (in theory) you can only copyright the presentation of a game's rules and not the mechanics themselves. The OGL makes explicit provisions under a licensing agreement to use the presentation of a common set of rules' text (ie the presentation) in some strictly defined ways. It is not a letter of marque.

I understand there were three items JG produced for DQ. Does anyone know if they were any good or not? I haven't found them with a casual effort and want to know if I need to expend more effort to find them.

Was there anything new in there that a gm might want? The Heroes and Villains would save hours, but not sure if it is necessary. The two adventures, if just adventures, might not be all that necessary, but if tbey added skills, spells, or colleges, then it might be worth tracking them down.

I don't recall there being anything particularly useful in the adventures though it has been years since I looked at them. I seem to recall that Heroes & Villains had a lot of "rules violations". That is characters ranked in weapons they didn't meet the requirements for and similar issues.
