60. RANGER [60.10] A ranger has the ability to move through woodland and other wilderness settings and to scout the terrain. The ranger has the ability to move undetected through woodland or other wilderness region settings, to evade pursuit through such regions, and to detect others moving or to attempt to avoid detection in these regions. This scouting ability has a Base Chance of [(AGx2) + (Rankx5)]%. The scouting ability also allows the character to infiltrate a wilderness region and to obtain information from others within the area that is being searched out for information. In this case, the character has a success chance of {(PCx2) + (Rankx3)]%, with rolls significantly under the success percentage providing more information gathered. In the case of this use of the skill, the character must spend at least (10-Rank) hours, with a minimum of one hour spent, scouting the area in which the information is to be obtained. If the character with ranger skill is trying to detect the presence of others during a scouting mission or while attempting to stop a scout on a mission, his chance of success is equal to [(PCx2) + (Rankx3)]%. If this roll is successful, the character with the Ranger skill reduces his opponent's chances of scouting by (Rankx4)%. [60.11] The ranger character is able to seek shelter within the woodland or other wilderness region settings, and can provide for the safety of others. The character with ranger skill has the ability to seek shelter during inclement weather and at normal times. The Base Chance of finding the best cover during any situation is equal to [(PCx3) + (Rankx4)]%. This chance of finding shelter is modified by -35% to -60% duirng storms and the like, especially during winter, and by -25% due to the type of terrain being inhos- pitable (like Waste or Desert). It will take the ranger approximately (Rankx2) hours to find the proper shelter. Once the ranger character has found the shelter, the character will have to fashion the shelter properly. The success chance of doing so is [PC + (MDx2) + (Rankx3)]%. This effort will take the character (12-Rank) hours of time and work, and will include fashioning shelter, huts, ladders, supports, roofing material and the like. If the ranger fails the skill roll with this effort, he will have a chance of spotting the error on a roll of [PC + (Rankx2)]% or less. If the problem is not spotted, there is a chance of [25 + (Difference between D100 chance and roll)]% of an accident or something going seriously wrong with the shelter. ---------- Copyright (c) 1984 John M.
